    1. The world’s first legally binding food waste targets are set EU-wide after nearly a decade of Foodrise’s campaigning: legally requiring all EU member states to achieve a 30% reduction in food wase at retail, food service and household level, and a 10% reduction in food waste in manufacturingby 2030 – mandating the reduction of an estimated 14 million tonnes of food waste by 2030.

    2. We successfully stop a planned ‘US-style’ megafarm in Methwold (Norfolk), which would have been one of the largest intensive livestock facilities in Europe housing over 1 million pigs and chickens. This collaborative campaign – with Sustain and local communities – sparks momentum for a UK-wide moratorium on factory farming.

    4. We bring the voices ocommunities from Poros (Greece), Senegal and Mauritania to the global stage during our panel event at the UN Ocean Conference. Our report Ocean Takeover is raised in Greek Parliament, setting a precedent against industrial aquaculture in the EU’s largest fish farming nation. This plays a role in stopping huge, planned seabass farm on the Greek isle of Poros and starting to turn the tide on the expansion of aquaculture in the Mediterranean.

    3. We pioneer strategic litigation in food and farming: from challenging the UK’s National Food Strategy in 2018 to subjecting the Australia-UK trade deal to judicial review, we’ve broken legal ground to hold food systems accountable.

    4. We co-ordinate a joint-letter, signed by over 100 organisations and experts, to challenge the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to retract a report over errors misleadingly downplaying the emissions mitigation potential of a shift to lower-meat diets, covered in the The Guardian.

    1. We launch a legal challenge against the UK government regarding the inadequacy of its environmental assessment of the UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement, the first time the implementing legislation of a trade deal is challenged in UK courts. Legal proceedings are ongoing.

UK restaurant chain Wagamama changes its salmon sourcing policy following public pressure from our fish farming campaign, which included a 100,000-signature petition and public support from Chris Packham. Our exposé on salmon farming’s financial backers led Triodos Bank to review its investment in Bakkafrost, one of Europe’s biggest producers.

    4. Greenwash Grocers report launches, exposing greenwash tactics of retailers and failure to make the link between meat and climate.

    2. IDB Invest, the private sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank, cancelled its proposed $200 million loan to Brazilian meat giant Marfrig, as a result of campaigning from the Stop Financing Factory Farming (S3F) coalition and other civil society organisations – who first raised the alarm in September 2021, coordinating a letter signed by over 200 civil society organisations urging the bank to reject the deal due to its environmental practices and links to illegal deforestation and indigenous land rights violations.

Notre Poisson launches, a major global programme of work exposing unjust and unsustainable fish feed supply chains into the European Union from Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia, alongside partners in West Africa. This influences fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO) factories in West Africa to close, and the Senegalese government to tighten restrictions on FMFO production.

  5. 2021

    1. Our advocacy efforts and petition – which achieved close to 60,000 signatures – contributes to the inclusion of health and sustainable diets in the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution and Climate Change Committee pathways. 

    2. Our briefing was mentioned in parliament, exposing how UK parliamentary pensions are linked to Brazilian meat giant JBS, a company known for its role in deforestation.

  6. 2020

    1. We are the first NGO to call for biomethane production to be kept within its sustainable niche, with the launch of Green Gas Without the Hot Air report, highlighting flaws in anaerobic digestion and making it clear that it isn’t a solution to food waste. The report influences the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution and appears in the Journal of Cleaner Production.

Butchering the Planet report is published and the Stop Funding Factory Farming (S3F) global coalition launches (co-founded by Foodrise), targeting Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) funding in industrial livestock. Butchering the Planet is the first comprehensive analysis of global financial flows to the meat and dairy industry and receives widespread coverage.

  7. 2019

    1. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams in London, Sussex, Merseyside and Buckinghamshire recover food to prevent food waste, prepare meals and support communities. Our team in Merseyside provided over 4,000 portions of soup made from surplus veg.

    2. Our pioneering Big Livestock vs the Planet report is the first global campaign targeting industrial meat and dairy finance, marking the launch of a global divestment movement focusing on the livestock industry.

    3. EcoTalent launches, kickstarting a movement to diversify the food and environment sector with paid internships and inspiring several similar schemes to get young people from marginalised background into the environmental sector. Half of participants were people of colour, 20% were neurodiverse, and 80% secured work following the programme. 

    4. Meat us Halfway, the UK’s first supermarket scorecard encouraging supermarkets to sell healthy, low-meat diets and reduce climate impact, influences Iceland to consider joining the Cerrado Manifesto, and Tesco to expand their plant-based proteins. The scorecard approach was later adopted in France, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, and Poland.

    3. Alchemic Kitchen is founded in Merseyside, led by Lucy Antal (the future winner of BBC’s Food and Farming Award). Alchemic Kitchen works to improve access to affordable and healthy food across the Liverpool City Region. It has now become an independent Community Interest Company.

    1. Carina Millstone joins as Executive Director.

    2. Tesco becomes the UK’s first supermarket to commit to publishing and halving supply-chain waste and persuades its top 24 suppliers to do the same, directly influenced by our campaigning.

    3. Total Bull campaign launches, taking our work beyond food waste into industrial meat and dairy, exposing misleading labels, particularly ‘fake farms’ on supermarket meat. Our expose of the non-existent Loch Muir led M&S to drop their fake branding of Scottish salmon.

    1. Feeding the 5000 events in the US rescue 19,000 lbs of food and serve 29,000 meals.

    1. Feeding the 5000 expands globally, serving 170,000+ people worldwide and continuing to move the issue of food waste up social and political agendas.

    2. Our Stop Dumping petition amasses more than 1 million signatures speaking out against harmful supermarket trading practices. This results in Tesco changing its rules so that Kenyan suppliers are no longer forced to ‘top and tail’ green beans – preventing 135 tonnes of food waste per year.

    3. Foodrise’s Gleaning Network features on ‘Jamie and Jimmy’s Food Waste Fight’ TV show with Jamie Oliver. We also supported Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s ‘War on Waste’ TV programme which featured a gleaning day. These primetime TV programmes led to several supermarkets launching ‘wonky veg’ ranges and food waste reduction initiatives.

    4. The Pig Idea launches, which re-opens the debate amongst UK and EU policy makers on using food waste to animal feed.

    1. We become a registered charity, named Feedback (renamed Foodrise in 2025).

    2. Our food waste campaigning convinces Tesco to become world’s first retailer to commit to publicly reporting their third-party audited food waste data. Other supermarkets including Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Asda, The Co-operative and Marks & Spencer soon followed.

    3. The Gleaning Network is awarded Nesta’s Waste Challenge Prize for demonstrating the biggest effect in reducing farm food waste.

  14. 2012

    1. The Gleaning Network UK is founded to revive the practice of gleaning, where volunteers harvest and redirect farm-level food surplus to community food and food aid organisations. Network rapidly expands to seven regional gleaning hubs nationwide, coordinated by Foodrise.

  15. 2009

    1. Feeding the 5000, a public feast made from food that would otherwise have gone to waste led by Tristram Stuart and Niki Charalampopoulou, launches in Trafalgar Square in London, sparking a global movement to end food waste.
